Helen Loveday
Conservation of Manuscripts & Works of Art on Paper
Preservation & Care of Collections
Helen is a leading figure in the field of paper conservation, with studios in central London and Cambridgeshire. She is an accredited member of the Institute of Conservation, and with over 30 years of experience has helped clients across the world with her knowledge and understanding of manuscripts and works of art on paper.
Helen is entirely independent, and offers advice, guidance and expertise with discretion and in total confidence. Her clients include the art dealers and auction houses of London, New York and Paris; in addition she works with individual collectors, public museums, university libraries, and bodies such as The National Trust and English Heritage. Through her work and research in the field of Middle Eastern and Indian manuscripts and miniatures, examples of her conservation can also be found across India and the Middle East.
In London Helen is employed as a consultant for the Royal Academy, The National Gallery, and Dulwich Picture Gallery, and in Cambridge for The Fitzwilliam Museum. In this role she liaises with the borrower and lender regarding the condition of the works of art as they enter the galleries for exhibition, and thereafter overseas their care for the duration of their time on display.
Helen is very familiar with the annual programme of international art fairs, and is accustomed to working to the fixed deadlines that these impose. This is true of all her work, which she aims to return within the timeframe discussed at the start of any project.
In 2001 Helen published her first book entitled Islamic Paper – A History of the Ancient Craft, in which she explains how it is possible to classify and date paper through the examination of the marks left within the sheet during its manufacture. She is now working towards the creation of an online resource for the identification of artists’ mediums: the paints, pencils, inks, crayons, pastels, chalks and charcoals that are applied to paper, and how these change over time in appearance and condition according to their physical and chemical composition.
Helen is always happy to give help and advice by e-mail, and aims to reply to messages within 24 hours.
